Why we do what we do
The education of young people is, perhaps, one of the most important tasks that a person can undertake during the course of his life. The education of everyone is rooted in the family, but within a wider context of school and one's free time. School naturally plays an immense role in a child's development: it is there that a child spends a significant proportion of his or her time each week, and it is there that many human relations are formed. Parents wish to send their children to good schools, and will try to keep up to date on a child's academic progress. This will often entail a level of sacrifice (for instance, in getting to school meetings, talking to teachers and tutors and so forth), but it is always worthwhile. However, what about all of the hours children spend outside of school...time with their friends, pursuing their hobbies etc? The reality is that this is often precisely when one's character is formed, where one receives one's formation in life.
This is the reason why youth clubs exist: in order to help young people make the most of their free time to pursue worthwhile and enriching pastimes, and through them to learn how to use their freedom properly to mature into responsible individuals who wish to serve the needs of others and not just their own. Nullamore is a response to the concern of parents for an adequate formation for their children during their free time (after school, on weekends, term holidays, during the summer months etc.).
It is an educational centre focused on providing extra-curriculum activities for young people, and specifically so with regard to their intellectual and spiritual development. In this manner, Nullamore complements both the family and the school. However, it cannot, and does not wish to, appropriate the responsibility parents have. Its role is to help parents fulfil their responsibilities towards their children.
